Become an AmeriCorps Member

How can I become an AmeriCorps member?

Joining an AmeriCorps program is easy. You can get started by following these simple steps:

Ensure that you’re eligible.

AmeriCorps members must:

  • be at least 17 years of age,
  • be a U.S. citizen, 
  • have a high school diploma (or be willing to work toward one), and
  • be able to commit to at least one year of service.

Some host sites request additional education requirements depending on the position that the member serves in. AmeriCorps members must be able to pass local, state and national background checks.

Determine the type of position you are interested in.

AmeriCorps members serve in full-time, half-time, and minimum-time capacity. Hours and benefits vary with each position. All positions allow for the members to place qualified student loans, currently in repayment, into forbearance and request an interest accrual payment upon completion of the member’s service.

Full-time Members 1700 Hours of Service $12,100 $5,550

*Full-time members are also eligible for individual health insurance and may be eligible for child care reimbursement if qualified.

Half-time Members 900 Hours of Service $6,229 $2,775

Minimum-time Members 300 Hours of Service $0 $1,175
